For years, aesthetic treatment was something many people considered only once they could see something they wanted to change. Perhaps a line had become more noticeable, the skin was starting to feel less firm or pigmentation was becoming harder to cover.

That is beginning to change.

More people are now asking what they can do before these changes become more established. You may hear this described as prejuvenation, preventative aesthetics or even collagen banking. Although the terminology is new, the idea behind it is quite simple: look after the quality of your skin now, rather than waiting until there is more to correct later.

At Dr Kate Aesthetics in Cockfosters, North London, we often see patients who do not necessarily have wrinkles that concern them. Instead, they might say their skin looks more tired, feels drier than it used to, has lost some of its glow or simply does not feel quite as firm.

Modern anti-ageing treatments can address these earlier changes without trying to make you look different. The aim is to support healthy, resilient skin as it naturally changes with age.

What Is Prejuvenation and When Should You Start?

Prejuvenation is essentially a proactive approach to ageing skin. It does not mean that everyone should start having aesthetic treatments in their twenties, and there is no “right” age to begin. Two people who are both 35 can have completely different skin depending on genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle, hormones and skincare.

Instead of deciding based on age, it is more useful to look at what your skin is actually doing. Perhaps it is becoming noticeably drier. Maybe fine lines linger for longer after you smile. You might notice that your skin does not look as firm as it once did, or that pores and uneven texture are becoming more apparent.

These relatively small changes can be the point at which someone starts thinking about preventative treatment.

You may also have heard the phrase collagen banking. Collagen provides much of the support and firmness within our skin, but its production changes as we age. Collagen banking simply describes the idea of supporting collagen while the skin still has good structure, rather than waiting until significant loss has already occurred.

That does not mean having lots of collagen-stimulating treatments. In fact, good preventative aesthetics should be quite conservative. If your skin does not need treatment, there is little benefit in treating it simply for the sake of “prevention”.

What Are the First Signs of Skin Ageing Before Wrinkles?

Wrinkles tend to get most of the attention, but they are only one part of skin ageing.

Some of the first changes are much less obvious.

This is why choosing an anti-ageing treatment purely because it is popular can be unhelpful.

Someone with dehydrated skin may need something completely different from someone beginning to notice laxity. Similarly, early lines around the eyes do not automatically mean that volume needs to be added to the area.

The starting point should always be identifying what has actually changed.

Which Anti-Ageing Treatments Can Be Used Before Wrinkles Become Established?

There is no single treatment that prevents skin ageing.

For younger or relatively healthy skin, we are usually looking at specific concerns rather than trying to “anti-age” the entire face. That might mean improving hydration, supporting collagen, smoothing uneven texture or addressing the first signs of reduced firmness.

The treatment can then be matched to the problem.

SkinPen Microneedling: When Texture and Collagen Are the Concern

If your skin is beginning to feel less smooth or you are noticing enlarged pores, fine lines or uneven texture, SkinPen microneedling may be considered.

SkinPen creates very small, controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This sounds more dramatic than it is. The purpose is to trigger the skin’s natural repair response, which includes the production and remodelling of collagen.

This makes SkinPen particularly useful when we want to improve the skin itself rather than change the shape of the face.

It can be used for concerns including uneven texture, enlarged pores, early fine lines, pigmentation and acne scarring.

Results develop gradually as the skin responds. You should not expect to wake up with completely different skin the following morning. Instead, the aim is for the skin to become smoother, fresher and healthier-looking over time.

For someone interested in collagen banking but without significant skin laxity, this type of gradual collagen stimulation can make more sense than jumping straight to a more intensive treatment.

Profhilo: When Your Skin Feels Drier and Less Elastic

Sometimes patients cannot identify one particular line or wrinkle that bothers them. They simply feel their skin has become drier, duller or less bouncy.

This is where Profhilo may be useful.

Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment designed to improve hydration and skin quality. Unlike a traditional dermal filler, it is not primarily used to create volume or reshape facial features.

For patients whose face still has good structure but whose skin is beginning to feel less hydrated or elastic, this can be a more appropriate approach.

Profhilo can also sit alongside treatments such as SkinPen because they are doing different jobs. One is supporting hydration and skin quality, while the other is encouraging the skin’s natural repair and collagen-remodelling processes.

You do not necessarily need both. The combination is considered when there is more than one aspect of skin quality that would benefit from treatment.

Polynucleotides: When Skin Looks Tired, Thin or Crepey

Polynucleotides are another option when the priority is improving the quality of the skin rather than adding volume.

They are injectable treatments used to support skin repair, hydration, elasticity and collagen and elastin production.

One area where this can be particularly useful is around the eyes.

When the under-eye skin starts to look thinner, crepey or tired, it can be tempting to assume that filler is the answer. However, not every under-eye concern is caused by volume loss. Sometimes it is the quality of the skin itself that needs attention.

Polynucleotides can also be used on areas such as the face, neck, décolletage and hands, depending on what is being treated.

What If My Skin Is Starting to Lose Firmness?

There is a difference between wanting to maintain good skin and beginning to see genuine laxity. If the skin is starting to feel less firm, radiofrequency treatments may be necessary.

Forma uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat the tissues, with the aim of stimulating collagen and elastin and improving firmness. It can be used on areas including the face, neck and décolletage.

For relatively mild changes, we would usually start with an approach that matches the level of laxity present rather than automatically choosing the most intensive treatment available.

Where changes are becoming more established, Morpheus8 may be considered.

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. The tiny needles deliver radiofrequency energy at controlled depths beneath the skin, allowing treatment to work more deeply on collagen and tissue remodelling.

This does not mean that everyone interested in preventing skin ageing needs Morpheus8. Quite the opposite. If someone’s skin only needs hydration or mild collagen support, a less intensive option may be much more appropriate.

The treatment should match the skin, not the trend.

Should You Have Anti-Wrinkle Injections Before You Have Wrinkles?

This is one of the most common questions around preventative aesthetics. Expression lines form because our skin repeatedly folds when we smile, frown or raise our eyebrows. When we are younger, those lines usually disappear again when the face relaxes. Over time, some can begin to remain visible even when the face is at rest.

Anti-wrinkle injections temporarily reduce the activity of selected facial muscles. This can soften existing expression lines and reduce some of the repetitive movement contributing to them.

But there is no age at which you “should” start. Someone with very strong facial movement may notice lines beginning to linger relatively early. Someone else may reach their forties with very few expression lines.

That is why preventative anti-wrinkle treatment should be based on your facial movement, anatomy and what actually bothers you, rather than treating simply because you have reached a certain age. And importantly, the aim is not to remove every sign of movement. Natural facial expression still matters.

FAQs About Preventative Anti-Ageing Treatments

Do I need preventative treatments in my twenties?

Not necessarily. Age alone is not a reason to start aesthetic treatment. Your skin condition, facial movement, concerns and goals are much more useful indicators of whether treatment is appropriate.

Can I have preventative aesthetics if I have sensitive skin?

Potentially, although sensitive or reactive skin needs careful assessment. Sometimes improving the skin barrier or addressing irritation first is more appropriate than immediately introducing a procedure.

Can preventative treatments be used on the neck?

Yes. Depending on the concern, treatments such as SkinPen, Profhilo, polynucleotides, Forma and Morpheus8 may also be considered for the neck.

Do collagen-boosting treatments stop collagen loss permanently?

No. Treatments can support collagen production and remodelling, but they cannot stop the natural ageing process. Sun exposure, genetics, hormones and lifestyle will continue to influence how your skin changes.

How often should you have preventative aesthetic treatments?

There is no universal schedule. It depends on the treatment, your skin and how it responds. You should not need to keep adding treatments simply because you have started a preventative plan.

Start With a Consultation, Not a Treatment List

If you have started noticing small changes in your skin, you do not have to wait until they become more established before asking what your options are. But equally, you do not need aesthetic treatment simply because preventative aesthetics is becoming more popular.

A consultation at Dr Kate Aesthetics in Cockfosters, North London gives you the opportunity to have your skin, facial movement and concerns properly assessed before deciding whether treatment is worthwhile.

Book a consultation to find out what your skin needs now and how you can support its quality as it changes over time.
