Botulin toxin type A is a naturally occurring bacterial protein.
Prior to injecting any make up will be removed and your skin will be disinfected. Your face and facial muscles will then be examined and assessed to see how they work as this varies between individuals. A fine needle will be used for the injections which typically take around 5 to 10 minutes. You can then return to your normal daily activities.
It normally takes on average 3 to 5 days to start working and 2 to 3 weeks for the full effects to be seen. If you have deep lines or lines that have been there for a long time they are unlikely to completely disappear with your first treatment. You will find with regular treatments over time that the lines and wrinkles continue to get better and better.
A treatment would normally be done every 3 to 4 months on average.
The injections are normally painless.
Yes, anti-wrinkle injections can cause bruising. This is because the needle used to inject the medication can break small blood vessels under the skin. The bruising is usually mild and goes away on its own within a few days.
Here are some tips to reduce the risk of bruising from anti-wrinkle injections:
- Apply a cold compress to the injection site for 20 minutes after the procedure.
- Avoid taking aspirin or other blood thinners for a few days before and after the procedure.
- Let your doctor know if you have any bleeding disorders.
- There may be slight discomfort as the needle enters the skin
- There is also the possibility of bruising or bleeding at the injection sites
- It is also possible that you may get a headache
It is not possible to carry out research to assess whether anti-wrinkle injections are safe during pregnancy. Therefore it is best to avoid having anti-wrinkle injections during pregnancy.
- For the next hour: Use the muscles as shown around every 15 minutes
- For at least 4 hours: Following your treatment keep upright and do not bend excessively
- For the next 12 hours: avoid excessive alcohol and avoid wearing make up
- For 2 days after treatment: do not rub or massage the treated area. After washing pat skin dry very gently with a soft towel
- For 2 weeks after treatment: avoid exposure to strong sunlight, very cold temperatures and saunas
- Do not have any beauty treatment on your face e.g. facials, facial massage
